GELCO was borne out of the voluntary closure of Tangent Expeditions Ltd in August 2020, following the cessation of expeditions to Greenland due to COVID-19, combined with the high operational costs of maintaining a storage facility at Constable Point. A new vision and dynamic structure were needed to meet the needs of the the rapidly changing world of exploration and adventure in Greenland.
Some assets at Constable Point were sold to private individuals whilst the main storage facilities were sold to Futures Greenland ApS, a wholly Greenland owned and operated storage and logistics company. GELCO rents storage facilities and other services from Futures Greenland ApS.
GELCO is a trading arm of California Ocean Northumbria Ltd, a UK based travel company, and was set up to handle sales of non-domestic travel services. California Ocean Northumbria Ltd offers UK based travel and tourism services and specialises in luxury camper van rental tours and holidays.
Owner and director Paul Walker has more than 30 years experience of Greenland adventure and exploration services since organising his first two month expedition to East Greenland in 1989. Since then, he’s gone on to organise over 250 expeditions all over Greenland, becoming the leading expert in his field. He has guided many of these himself and now works with a team of highly qualified associates including IFMGA Mountain Guides, IPG Polar Guides, WMCI Mountain Instructors, Safety Advisers, Field Assistants and Snowmobile Guides.
Constable Point Facility
In 2011 Tangent Expeditions developed storage facilities at the remote airstrip of Constable Point to enable groups to more easily access their stores, food and equipment before heading out into the mountains. This transformed accessibility to the region. The nearby mountains of Liverpool Land ranges provide easy access to stunning alpine mountains, glaciers and fjords. Travelling further afield into the National Park rewards expeditioners with unclimbed summits, untouched landscapes and a true wilderness experience. These facilities proved too costly to maintain and now have been taken over by local Greenland company Futures Greenland ApS. “Futures” now handles this facility and it is a stopping off point where groups can collect and organise their cargo of expedition food and equipment before continuing on their expedition. Other local services are also available from Futures, such as snowmobile and boat transport.
GELCO works closely with a number of self employed guides who accompany groups passing through Constable Point throughout the main expedition seasons. Having access to snowmobiles and inflatable SIB boats allows clients to receive the best possible support throughout their expedition.
Our specialist associate guides can provide experienced leadership for all manner of ski touring, mountaineering, snowshoeing and climbing expeditions. Futures has recently added a fleet of sea kayaks, providing further opportunity for guided and self guided paddling trips in the most remote regions of northeast arctic Greenland.
GELCO specialises in providing highly professional logistical support and guiding services to Greenland expeditions and exploration companies, including scientific and mining operations. We also provide bespoke logistics to self guided ski touring, snow shoe, climbing, mountaineering, kite skiing, boating and sea kayak expeditions.
Corporate, school and youth groups can also enjoy a real challenge in Greenland. We have access to specialist guides in leadership and personal development and offer corporate team development expeditions.
GELCO provides custom consultancy, logistics and location services to the TV, film and documentary industry.
GELCO can also organise custom trips to other parts of Greenland for totally unique and bespoke adventures.
We do not employ guides directly ourselves but work with a number of highly experienced and self employed guides on an associate basis.
